New Travel Links Proposed for Brittany - Rennes to Nantes TGV
Rennes City Council and their colleagues in Nantes City Council (in Loire Atlantique department) will co-operate in plans to put in place a brand new fast TGV rail link between the two cities.
The rail link would mean cut the journey time between these two major cities to just 45 minutes by 2020.
Discussions are at a very early stage and even a provisional route between Rennes and Nantes has not yet been decided. A feasibiity study will be co-financed between the two city councils with the help of French rail network operator Réseau Ferré de France. Public consultations would begin in 2013 after completion of the feasibility study and the fixing of a provisional route north from Nantes through Loire-atlantique and on to Rennes. It seems certain, however, that the new rail link would also encompass the new major international airport being constructed at Notre-Dame-des-Landes near Nantes as a replacement for the existing Nantes-atlantique airport.
The new airport is likely to see an increase in the number of long-haul carriers flying to Nantes and combined with the proposed new Nantes to Rennes rail link, there could be significant economic benefits for Brittany.
