The details of the 2011 have been officially released today and it is great news for sports lovers in Brittany.
The 2011 Tour de France will start in the Vendee on Saturday July 2nd and will cover 3,471 kms before the grand finish on July 24th in Paris.
Brittany will be home to 4 stages of the 2011 race with the towns of Redon, Lorient, Mur de Bretagne, Carhaix, Cap Frehel and Dinan all playing host.
Stage 3: Olonne dur Mer to Redon - Monday 4th July (198 km)
This will be the first time that Redon has featured on the Tour de France route.
Stage 4: Lorient to Mur de Bretagne – Tuesday 5th July (172 km)
Lorient has previously been voted the ‘most sporting town’ in France and has previously been the location of Tour de France stage finishes 8 times.
Mur de Bretagne has never hosted a race stage but has been nicknamed the ‘L’Alpe d’Huez of Brittany’ due to its unusual long, straight slope which has been used in the past as a route ‘time trial’.
Stage 5: Carhaix to Cap Frehel – Wednesday 6th July (158 km)
Neither Carhaix nor Cap Frehel have ever hosted the Tour de France before but Carhaix has hosted stages of the great race ‘Kreiz Briezh Elite’ and Cap Frehel was home to the womens race ‘Tour of Brittany’ in 2005.
Stage 6: Dinan to Lisieux – Thursday 7th July (226 km)
Dinan has been a stage town for the Tour de France 6 times before. The last time being in 1995 when Dinan was the start of a stage which finished in Lannion.
