Travel to and around Brittany and France

Category: Travel Information

Description:

Due to its close proximity Brittany is extremely easy to get to from most of the UK and Ireland either via the sea, rail, road or air.  For further information check out the following links;

Ports

There are two ports offering sailings between France, England and Ireland; Roscoff and Saint Malo which carry over 1.5 million passengers every year.

Airports

Brittany has six main passenger airports carrying over 1.6 million passengers each year; Brest, Rennes, Lorient, Dinard, Lannion and Quimper.

Please note that Quimper and Lannion do not offer flights between France and the UK.

Rail

Brittany has a comprehensive rail network featuring TER, TGV and Corail Lunea.

Road

The A11, the Océane Route, links Brittany to Paris. A dual carriageway runs from Rennes to Nantes, and there is a motorway from Nantes to Bordeaux.

Please see Guide2Brittanys 'Guide to Driving in Brittany' and 'Guide to the Bus & Coach Network in Brittany' for further information on travelling around Brittany by road.

The French Network

Brittany also benefits from Frances national transport network which some consider to be one of the best in Europe.

Road network

France has almost 20,000 km of roads of which 11,000 km are motorways.  Tolls are charged on most motorways and can be paid for with either cash or bank card.

On main roads the speed limit is usually 90 km per hour and the speed limit on motorways is 130 km per hour.

Rail network

France has an extensive network of Railway with 29,473 km of lines in service which includes 1,881 km of high-speed lines.

The SNCF (French National Railways) manages the national network.  The high speed service is called TGV.  Generally, the earlier you buy a ticket before the journey the cheaper the fare.

Air network

There are over 150 French airlines offering both freight and passenger services at over 150 airports.

Bus network

Most towns and cities have good bus and tram networks, however, in very rural areas these services may not be frequent and so a car is often essential.
