Each department Arrondissements has subdivisions called cantons. In France there are 4,032 cantons.
The main purpose is to act as constituencies for the election of members of the General Council in each department i.e., Cantonal Elections.
Cantons also serve as centres to administer local public services and justice.
In Brittany there are over 200 cantons many of which group together a number of communes which are the lowest administrative division in France.
