Introduction
Guemene sur Scorff is a small and lively town which is known for its attractive town centre.
The town was originally the seat of the Dukes of Rohan from the 13th to 15th century and the town was built up around a medieval castle. Most of the old castle has been destroyed but the Porterie, the old castle entrance, still stands. Previous residents of the town has made good use of the castle and many of the houses and buildings now contain parts of the castle chimney breasts, turret stones and gateway posts making a walk around the town an interesting experience.
Geography
Guemene sur Scorff is in the department of Morbihan in the south of central Brittany. Guemene sur Scorff sits on the Scorff river and is crossed by three smaller rivers, La Riviere La Rosette, La Damiette and Le Fremeur.
The town is unusual in that it is surrounded by wooded hillsides and does not have any outlying land and is bounded by the town boundaries only.
Shopping
There is a market in Guemene sur Scorff at the Place Joseph Loth every Thursday morning. Guemene sur Scorff also has a bakery and a butchers. For all other groceries there is an Intermarche supermarket in the town.
For clothes shopping and larger chains visit Pontivy which is only 17 km away.

Guemene sur Scorff has two Ecoles Primaires et Maternelles and two Colleges. The nearest Lycess is 12 km away in Berne.
Guemene sur Scorff has a post office, two hair salons, several garages, a tabac, a florist, an antique store, a library, a dentist practice, three doctors practice, a vets, two banks, two pharmacies and an optician.
The town has a centrally located Gendarmerie and a small hospital clinic for the elderly and disabled. The nearest general hospital and Ophthalmologist is 24km away in Pontivy.
For entertainment there are several restaurants, creperies and cafes. Guemene sur Scorff is also home to Les Trois Marchands which is thought to be the oldest pub in Brittany dating from the mid 1600s.
Guemene sur Scorff also has a cinema.
Tourism
Guemene sur Scorff has a hotel in the centre of the town as well as good Gite, Chambre d’Hotes and camping accommodation options in the surrounding area.
Due to its location in central Brittany Guemene sur Scorff is a perfect base for exploring Brittany. The nearest beach to Guemene sur Scorff is the lakeside beach at Lac de Guerledan and the nearest coastal beach is just 40 km away in Lorient.
The town holds regular one off events such as carnivals, fetes and Fest Noz throughout the year.
Unfortunately although there is not many remains of the old Guemene sur Scorff castle left the town still has some wonderful old buildings and it is worth taking a stroll around the town centre. Walking plans are available from the Tourist office;
- Take the well marked out town walk which covers 3.5 km around the town
- The old town baths
- The ancient town gallows
Sporting & Other Activities
Guemene sur Scorff has an active and friendly association scene and you can enjoy athletics, football, handball. Judo, table tennis, fishing, cycling, martial arts, basketball, drama, music, art, languages, archaeology and singing.
In the surrounding area hunting, hiking, fishing and cycling are also popular and well catered for.
