Introduction
Callac is named after the Gallo Roman settlement which was originally at the site - Kal which is old Celtic for rock.
The village is quiet but active and friendly. As many local French farmers have chosen to retire to the area it is still one of the few places that you can still hear Breton being spoken.
Callac is most known for the birth place of the 'Breton Spaniel' which was originally a cross between a Scottish Setter and a Coalman, a local Breton dog.
Geography
Callac is in the department of Cotes d'Armor in central Brittany and covers an area of 33.03 km². The river Hyeres , a tributary of the Alder, flows through the village.
Callac has a beautiful lake, Le Lac de la Vallee Verte, which is surrounded by woodlands and is one of the reasons that Callac has a reputation as being a 'green holiday destination'.
Shopping
There is a market in Callac every Wednesday morning. Broons also has a small grocery store, two bakeries, two butchers, a tabac, a hardware store and a clothes shop. For all other groceries there is a Casino and an Intermarche supermarket in the town.
For clothes shopping and larger chains visit Carhaix which is only 20 km away.

Callac has an 'Ecole Primaire et Maternelle' and a 'College'. The nearest Lycee is 16km away towards Carhaix.
Callac has a post offices, several hair salons and garages, three dentist practices, two doctors practices, a vets, two banks, a library, two pharmacies and an optician.
The village has a centrally located Gendarmerie and Pompier. The nearest hospital is 20km away in Carhaix.
For entertainment there are several Cafe bars, a Creperie and a popular Restaurant. Callac also has two cinemas.
Tourism
Callac has three hotels and a town campsite. There are also lots of Gite and Chambre d’Hotes accommodation options in the area.
Callac's nearest beach is just 35 km away at Plestin Les Greves. The village holds regular one off events such as fetes and a Fest Noz throughout the year.
The village is home to a unique museum 'Maison de l'Epagneul Breton' which brings to life the history of the Breton Spaniel through art, video and historic artefacts.
It is worth having a walk around Callac passing the following places of interest;
- Ruins of the Botmel Chapel which was the original ancient parish church
- The Naous Statue which commemorates a horse famous in the 1940s for its physical attributes
- Callac Church
- The Gallo Roman Bridge
Sporting & Other Activities
Callac has a municipal gymnasium and sports field complex with good facilities as well as some active clubs and associations.
Le Lac de la Vallee Verte is used for fishing and fishing competitions are held throughout the year. There are also several well maintained nature trails which run around the lake in the surrounding woods.
In the area there are good facilities for golf, basketball, rollerblading and tennis.
Callac is also host to Europe's 3rd largest cycling event the 'Pierre le Bigaut' which is a charity event supporting Cystic Fibrosis research held in June every year. The event attracts up to 7000 cyclists from all over Europe and is named after a former professional cyclist who won stages in the Tour de France. The event consists of rides from 25 km to 160 km and is designed to be accessible to all levels of cyclist.
