Introduction
The settlement of Bannalec is mentioned 1030 where is it referred to as Plebs Banadluc. The name Bannalec in Breton means 'Broom' which refers to the plant Cytisus Scoparius whose golden flowers can be seen all over the region.
Today Bannalec is a small rural community with a strong focus on farming.
Geography
Bannalec is a town in the department of southern Finistere and covers an area of 77.51 km².
The town is halfway between Quimper & Lorient and is naturally bordered by the River L'Isole to the north west and River Aven to the south east.
Shopping
There is a market in Bannalec every Wednesday morning on the Rue de Scaer. Bannalec also has three bakeries, two butchers, a fishmongers, a bookstore, a hardware store and a clothes shop. For all other groceries there is a Intermarche supermarket in the town.
For clothes shopping and larger chains visit Quimperle which is only 13 km away, or alternatively Concarneau is 21 km and Quimper is 44km away.

Bannalec has four 'Ecoles Primaires et Maternelles' and one 'College'.
Bannalec has one post office, four hair salons, two veterinary practices, four garages, four banks, two dentist practices, four doctors practices, an optician, two pharmacies and a library. The nearest hospital is 12 km away in Quimperle. The town also has centrally located Gendarmerie and Pompier.
For entertainment Bannalec has several restaurants and cafes as well as a creperie and a bar.
Tourism
Bannalec has two hotels, a Chambre d’Hotes and a gite complex. There is also a campsite in the town which is run by an English family.
Bannalec does not have any specific 'tourist attractions' but there are plenty of interesting walks around the area as well as the town 16th century church 'L’eglise Notre Dame du Folgoet' which has some beautiful architecture.
Every July and August Bannalec is home to the "Vendredis Musicaux" which is a series of music concerts held on Friday evenings throughout the town.
Sporting & Other Activities
There are good public sporting facilities in Bannalec including a leisure centre with a large sports hall, tennis courts, martial arts studio and athletics facilities.
Other popular associations include art, fishing, Breton culture, table tennis, hunting, music, dance, floristry and astrology.
There is also a very active walking groups with regular guided and planned walks.
