Introduction
There has been a settlement in this area for over 1000 years. Since the year 940 the town has been ruled by the Du' Plessis' family and in 1889 the settlement name was changed from Argentre to the current Argentre du Plessis.
The town retains much of its medieval charm and has many fine examples of 16th century houses.
Geography
Argentre du Plessis is a town in department Ille et Vilaine and although it Brittany it also borders both the Pays de la Loire and Normandy regions.
The town covers an area of 41.46 km². Argentre du Plessis is one of the 31 cantons of Rennes and is located halfway between Rennes and Lavel.
Shopping
There is a market in the centre of Argentre du Plessis every Thursday morning. Argentre du Plessis also has a grocery store, two bakeries, a butchers, two tabacs, two bookstores and two clothes shops. For all other groceries there is a Carrefour supermarket in the town.
More shops and larger chains can be found at Vitre which is only 8 km away or Rennes which is 30 km away.

Argentre du Plessis has three 'Ecoles Primaires et Maternelles' and one 'College'.
Argentre du Plessis has one post office, four hair salons, two veterinary practices, two garages, three banks, two dentist, three doctors, an optician, two pharmacies and a library. The nearest hospital is 8 km away in Vitre. The town also has centrally located Gendarmerie and Pompier.
For entertainment Argentre du Plessis has two restaurants, 3 creperies and two Cafe Bistros as well as a pizza takeaway. There is a cinema which shows films only at the weekends and a local taxi firm which will pick up from around the area.
Tourism
Argentre du Plessis has one hotel, two Chambre d’Hotes and two gites. There are also several campsites in the area.
Argentre du Plessis does not have any specific 'tourist attractions' but there are still several historical buildings which are well worth investigation. The town has two well laid out walking trails which take in some of the local sites. You can find plans of each of the walks from the shops in the town:
Le Chemin des Loups - an 18 km route.
Les Boucles de Petite Randonnee - which is actually three3 different walking circuits which can be walked together or you can pick and choose. The "Marteau" is 2.5 km long, the "Cul de Loup" covers a 3.5 km trail and the "Cinq Chemins" is the longest at 6.5 km.
Argentre du Plessis takes part in the 'Festival du Bocage', a festival hosted by 37 local communes and celebrating the local culture. The event is held every July.
Every September Argentre du Plessis is also home to the 'Fete locale de Septembre', an autumn festival with entertainments for the whole family.
Sporting & Other Activities
There are good public sporting facilities in Argentré du Plessis including a leisure centre and several sports centres which cater for tennis, football, athletics, basketball, handball, volleyball, judo and Boule de Cuir (french boxing).
The town also has a very active cycling group which meets every Sunday and a running club which meets several times a week.
In the surrounding area there are excellent golf, equestrian and karting facilities. Fishing is also prohibited in the local L'etang du Moulin Neuf with a fishing licence.
Other popular associations include dance, music and a drama group which produce several shows a year.
