Introduction
Antrain is a small town in the Ille et Vilaine department in north eastern Brittany. It is close to the Normandy border.
Geography
Antrain is situated in a valley alongside the River Couesnon and covers an area of 9.31 km². The town is one of the 6 cantons of Fougeres and is located 25 km north west of the Fougeres arrondissement.
The area enjoys a mild oceanic climate and is surrounded by grasslands and is close to several forests including the 'Foret Domaniale de Villecartier'.
Shopping
There is a market in the centre of Antrain every Tuesday morning. Antrain also has a grocery store, a bakery, a butchers, a tabac, a bookstore and a hardware store. For all other groceries there is a Carrefour supermarket in the town.
For clothes shopping and larger chains visit Fougeres which is only 25 km away.

Antrain has two 'Ecoles Primaires et Maternelles' and one 'College'.
The town has one post office, two hair salons, two veterinary practices, several garages, two banks, one dentist, numerous doctors, an optician, a small hospital clinic, two pharmacies and a library. Antrain also has centrally located Gendarmerie and Pompier.
For entertainment there are two Cafe Bistros.
Tourism
Antrain has five Chambre d’Hotes and there are several more hotels and gites in the region.
Antrain does not have any specific 'tourist attractions' but there are still several historical buildings which are well worth investigation. The town has three well laid out walking trails which take in some of the local sites. You can find plans of each of the walks from the shops in the town.
- Au Pays du Marquis de la Rouerie - an 11 km route which takes you past the Chateau de la Rouerie, Chateau des Blosses, Fontaine a Guillaume and the Bois de Banieres.
- Circuit de Loysance - a walk covering 13 km and which takes in the Chateau de Bonne Fontaine, Voie Ferree, Rives de Loysance and the Eglise Romane St Andre.
- Sentier de la Roche - a 5 km trail walking past the Rives du Couesnon, Site d'Escalade, Eglise du Siecle and the Pont Gothique sur le Couesnon.
Antrain takes part in the 'Culturels du Couesnon' which is a festival celebrating the local culture which is held every 3 years and hosted by 10 of the local communes.
Sporting & Other Activities
Due to the River Couesnon flowing through the area the town has some great trout fishing. The local forests also hold plenty of opportunities for both good walking and biking.
Antrain has a number of sporting and leisure associations and facilities including volleyball, yoga, tennis, football, table tennis, horse riding, hunting and dance. There are also popular art, drama and music clubs.
