Description:
The castle was built in 1542 on the rocky island of Taureau as a response to the threats from the English in the channel.
In 1721 the castle was converted into a prison until 1890 when it became a holiday residence. In the second world war it was taken over to be used by the German anti aircaraft before finally hosting a sailing school in the 1960s.
It was in 1996 that its historical importance was recognised and restoration began.
Please note that there are no toilets on the island but visitors may use facilities at the ports before and after the trip. Due to the unpredictable conditions of the sea and the location of the castle people with wheelchairs and prams may experience difficulties.
